Disc Review: Putter / Sacred Seed

The back-story

I’ve been playing disc golf since March 2023 (approximately )

Since that time I’ve been on a quest to find “my putter”. One that feels good in the hand, and one that I can put accurately with. Also, I quickly found that I prefer discs with simple/minimal designs. A blank putter with no stamp would be the ideal.

I was graciously given a Lone Star “Benny” putter in Delta plastic. I loved the feel in my hand. It was tacky, but still stiff. I wasn’t a fan of soft/floppy putters.

Now this disc had likely been in this guys car for years, slowing forming and re-forming to whatever junk was piled on top of it while in the Texas heat. I say that becase the flight plate was anything but flat, the thing is wobbly on about every conceivable axis.

Anyway, compared to the DX Aviar in the starter pack I started with, I was much more accurate with this disc, and it felt great in my hand.

Fast forward 8 or 9 months and I start to consider things like weight.. the Benny I was given was on the lighter side. So I decided to buy some 174g Bennys in various plastics only to find out, I liked the chalky/tacky feel of Delta Plastic.

Side-note:

Here’s the link if you aren’t familiar with LSD plastics.

Side-note Side-note:

It’s a slight pet peeve of mine that the plastic variations on LSD’s site is on a page called pages/downloads… A dedicated page to “plastics” would have been better, or just calling the page FAQs… I plan to post more about disc golf website pet peeves in another post later

I went to a local shop and the owner emphasized putter weights. I asked, “how important is weight anyway? Doesn’t it only matter when we’re playing in the wind?” to which he responded “There’s always wind”.

He was right, there will always be wind. That was the day I decided to only throw 174g putters.

At the shop I also got to put hands on MVP’s Electron Firm plastic, which I fell in love with.

I liked how the Envy had a similar profile to the Benny, but I was able to get completely different (more floaty) shot shapes with the Pixel.

The Review

On a whim one evening I ordered a First Run Sacred Discs Seed Putter - Aroma Line.

Disclaimer

I have no ill will towards any pro tour player, and didn’t buy this disc for social/political reasons.

What I like

  • I like the smell. Lavender is calming, at least, I’ve told myself it is. And when I first got the disc my routine would be to sniff the disc, then throw the putt. I don’t sniff the disc any more just before the putt, but I’ll get a few subconcious sniffs in during a round, which I think helps keep me grounded.
  • I like how the disc looks. Specifically, how minimal the design is. Less is more.
  • I like the grippy feel of the disc. At first, when the disc would get dusty from hitting the ground I’d worry because in a new condition the disc arrives sorta “oiled”. Not slippery oily, but in a good way. As I’ve played with the disc I worry less about it getting dirty/dusty, and I love the tacky feel it has, but it still manages to release predictably from my hand.
  • I like how consistent I throw with this putter. I practiced with all of my discs, and this one simply made it into the baseket more than the others.
  • I like how predictable the flight is. It will go straight (or whereever line you put it on) and will have a predictable fade at the end. I think the flight numbers of 2,4,0,1 are accurate.

Dislikes

  • I dislike that I might get judged by others due to the fundraising/social agenda behind the disc.
  • I dislik(ed) how deep the disc is. This disc wasn’t the most comfortable in the hand, at first. However, after seeing how consistent I’ve become with the disc, I’m more a fan of the deep dish now.
  • I dislike the 24.99 price, a lot! So much that I’m looking for discs with similar characterics, hoping I can find a clone or near-match for half the price. No, it wouldn’t be the same plastic, and wouldn’t have the same feel, but I don’t know if I’m ready to drop $100 on a set of 4 putters, when I can get Pixels between 12 and 13 dollars.
